First, I only talk to people who have attempted the “job” I’m exploring. So part of my qualification filters for the trigger which sets the stage for the interview.

Some examples:

  1. For a photo sharing idea targeted at moms with young kids, the trigger is obvious — have a newborn which potentially causes a switch from their old solution (like Facebook) to something new. I’d explore that journey
  2. When talking to early stage entrepreneurs, I might ask them about when they got hit with their idea… Then have them walk me through a timeline of what they did next.
